The Festival’s date – 6 September 2025

The residents of Phuket honor the traditions of the Chinese minority who leave on the island. The acknowledgment of the local Chinese culture created a civil tolerance between the two nations that allows the Chinese to celebrate, every year, the Por-Tor festival.
The events take place during the seventh month of the Chinese calendar (July – August, different dates). The festival symbols the opening of hell’s gates and the liberation of the restless evil ghosts that are called “hungry ghosts”.
According to the belief, the soul of the “hungry ghost” bears a grudge to the dead so it is necessary to compensate them in every possible way. Thus, during the holyday, the Chinese family brings offerings to the dead family members. The offerings are colored cakes of a turtle shape.
The turtle symbols long life, so when it is offered to the “hungry ghost” the chance of the person who make the offer to live long life increases. The ceremonies take place in all the Chinese shrines in Phuket.
