Puccini Festival
The Puccini Festival (Festival Puccini) in Torre del Lago, near Viareggio in Tuscany, is the only opera festival in the world dedicated entirely to Giacomo Puccini. It grew out of the composer’s own wish to hear his operas performed outdoors beside the lake he loved. The first performance, La Bohème, was staged in 1930, directed by librettist Giovacchino Forzano and conducted by Pietro Mascagni. Since 1966 the festival has been a fixed summer tradition, and since 2008 it has had its own home, the Gran Teatro Giacomo Puccini. The festival is held annually through July and August. Performances take place under the stars in a large open-air theatre on the shore of Lake Massaciuccoli, just a short walk from Villa Puccini, where the composer lived and wrote many of his best-known works and where he is buried. Evening performances begin as the sun sets over the lake, so many visitors come as much for the setting as for the singing.

- Gran Teatro Giacomo Puccini: The open-air theatre sits right on the lakeshore. Tiered seating faces a wide stage, with the water and reed beds behind it, and the sound carries through the warm Tuscan night.
- Villa Puccini Museum: The composer’s lakeside home keeps his piano, hunting gear and personal belongings as he left them. The family chapel where he is buried is inside the house.
- International Stars & Productions: Well-known opera singers and conductors from around the world appear alongside new stagings and revived classic productions, giving each season its own character.
