Once a year, on the night between Saturday and Sunday of Easter (Holy Saturday), a traditional fireworks battle between the people of Saint Mark church and the people of Virgin Mary Erethianis church, is held.
The churches that are situated one against the other, function as targets to a mutual fire. On Saturday evening, around 8 o’clock, the churches begin to shoot thousands of fireworks. The open space between the churches is wrapped with smoke and earsplitting noise.
Due to the numerous visitors during the festival days and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.
This is a humorous event where thousands of tourists and locals cheer to the shooters who aim the fireworks to the opposite church.
This is the incorrect date. Orthodox Easter falls on April 28th, 2019, so the rocket event will be on April 27th.
Dear Jesse,
Thanks for your constructive comment, the date is now up to date.
