Ryde Carnival

Ryde Carnival on the Isle of Wight is widely described as the oldest carnival in the UK. It grew out of Victorian celebrations in 1887, and the first full carnival procession followed in 1888, gaining royal patronage when Queen Victoria and Princess Beatrice made an appearance in the town. Apart from breaks during the two World Wars, the seaside town of Ryde has paraded every year since. The carnival is still run entirely by volunteers of the Ryde Carnival Association.

Ryde Carnival takes place each year in late August and early September. It’s spread over a children’s carnival day, an evening Main Carnival procession and a closing Illuminated Carnival. The illuminated night parade is the last carnival of the Isle of Wight season and brings the island’s summer of floats and fancy dress to a close.

Carnival Highlights:

  • Illuminated Carnival: The finale is a night-time procession of floats covered in lights, glowing walking groups and music. It winds through the town after dark and is the most atmospheric event of the season.
  • Main Carnival Procession: Decorated floats, marching bands, samba drummers and costumed walking troupes loop along Ryde Esplanade, up the steep High Street and back down to the seafront.
  • Children’s Carnival Day: A daytime parade where local children show off fancy-dress costumes through the High Street, Cross Street, George Street and Star Street, with prizes for the best outfits.
  • Victorian Seaside Setting: The processions pass Ryde’s long sandy beach, the Esplanade and Ryde Pier, one of the oldest seaside piers in Britain. The views stretch across the Solent towards Portsmouth.

Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:

  • Free Entry: All of the carnival processions are free to watch. They’re funded largely by bucket collections along the route, so bring some spare change to support the volunteers.
  • Best Viewing Spots: The Esplanade and High Street draw the biggest, liveliest crowds. Quieter residential stretches of the route give smaller children a better view of the floats.
  • Getting There: Ryde is the easiest gateway to the island: the Hovertravel hovercraft from Southsea and the Wightlink fast cat from Portsmouth both land within walking distance of the route. Many roads close on carnival nights and parking is very limited, so leave the car behind if you can.
  • What to Wear: Seaside evenings get cool and breezy by late summer, so bring a warm layer and a waterproof jacket for the night-time processions. Wear comfortable shoes for the hilly route.
  • Accommodation: Carnival week falls at the end of the Isle of Wight’s busy summer season, and B&Bs and guesthouses in Ryde and nearby Seaview book up early, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
  • Explore Ryde: Make a short break of it with a visit to the Museum of Ryde, a trip to Queen Victoria’s Osborne House or a hovercraft ride across the Solent — browse top Ryde tours and activities here.

Route maps, start times and entry forms for each procession are published on the Ryde Carnival Association’s official website ahead of the carnival. See details below, under “Event Related Information” section.
