Barcelona’s Saint Jordi´s Day that is called also “The Festival of the Rose & Book” is celebrated by the Catalans every year on spring.

The celebrations combine the holiday of St. Jordi the patron of the Catalans people with The World Book Day.
The event is known as one of the most popular and beautiful street performances in Catalonia and especially in Barcelona.

Due to the numerous visitors during the festival day and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.

During the holiday, Barcelona is filled with flower stands and book stands. One of the holiday’s customs is that men give women a rose usually bright red while women give men a book.

Beyond the holiday that is celebrated always on April 23rd, is a Catalan legend about the victory of the knight Jordi in his battle against a dreadful dragon which killed every living over Catalonia.

The story reaches its climax when the dragon tried to scramble the princess of Barcelona while Jordi attacked the dragon stab and kill it.
According to this legend, Jordi became the patron of the Catalans who celebrate his festival every year.

Spain background and overview
Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
