Every year the children of Aruba, which is located on the Caribbean Sea north to Paraguaná, Venezuela peninsula, celebrate Saint Nicolas (in Dutch Sinterklaas) holiday.

The main event is held on Oranjestad harbor where the island’s children wait for Saint Nicolas boat that arrive from the sea with his companion Black Peter (Zwarte Pieten).

According to tradition, the saint and his companion rise from the sea, distributing gifts and sweets to children who are good all year round.

Several days before the arrival of the saint, the children place their shoes outside the house hoping that on the next morning they’ll find St. Nicholas gifts.

During the feast day which is always on December 5th various events for children are held.

Aruba background and overview
Discovered and claimed for Spain in 1499, Aruba was acquired by the Dutch in 1636. The island's economy has been dominated by three main industries. A 19th century gold rush was followed by prosperity brought on by the opening in 1924 of an oil refinery. The last decades of the 20th century saw a boom in the tourism industry. Aruba seceded from the Netherlands Antilles in 1986 and became a separate, autonomous member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Movement toward full independence was halted at Aruba's request in 1990.
