Sassari is located on North West Sardinia. The unique and colorful Festival of Sassari is held every year since 1899. The festival name in Italian is Sassari Cavalcata Sarda.

It praises the royal visit in 1899, of Omberto the first the king of Italy with his wife the queen Margarita from Savoya royal family. Every year, hundreds of riders from all over the island, wearing traditional riding cloths, gather in a multicolored parade.

The magnificent parade colors the festive city with unique colors. The parade marches through all the city’s streets and alleys to the central square – Piazza Italia. On the afternoon hours, the activity is moved to the hippodrome where culture, music and dance events are held, until the morning.

Due to the numerous visitors during the festival day and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance. This spring festival marks the revival for the island’s residents.

Italy background and overview
Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the regional states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.
