Sassari, situated in the northwestern part of Sardinia, hosts the vibrant and distinctive Festival of Sassari annually since 1899. Known as “Sassari Cavalcata Sarda” in Italian. The festival commemorates the royal visit of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita from the royal family of Savoy.

Riders from across the island participate in the parade, adorned in traditional riding attire, creating a magnificent spectacle of colors that grace the festive city.

The parade traverses the streets and alleys, culminating in the central square, Piazza Italia.

As the day progresses, the festivities shift to the hippodrome, where cultural events, music, and dance performances captivate the audience until the early morning hours.

Due to the numerous visitors during the festival day and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.

This spring festival marks the revival for the island’s residents.

Italy background and overview
Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the regional states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.
