Snowbombing
Launched in 2000 in Risoul, France, by Manchester promoters Outgoing Ltd as an après-ski club-night promotion, Snowbombing has been based in Mayrhofen, Austria since 2005 and grown into Europe’s biggest snow-and-music festival. Originally a DJ and dance-music event, it added live bands to the bill in 2008, broadening the lineup well beyond electronic music.Spread over six days each year as the Zillertal’s ski season heads toward its close, the festival packs a full alpine ski trip and a full-scale music festival into one valley, with more than 140km of piste to ski by day and shows every night.
Festival Highlights:
- Mountain-Top Stages: DJ sets and live shows play out at altitude, on purpose-built stages partway up the mountain.
- Igloo Village Raves: a purpose-built village of ice igloos hosts some of the festival’s most distinctive late-night club sessions.
- Forest & Farmstead Parties: the lineup also spills into a forest clearing and a remote alpine farmstead for smaller, more intimate sets.
- Street Party Finale: an open-air street party takes over Mayrhofen’s town center as one of the week’s signature events.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Tickets: festival wristbands are often sold bundled with lift passes and accommodation as part of a package — check the combined deals before booking separately.
- Planning Your Days: with stages spread across the mountain and town, it’s worth mapping out your skiing around the day and evening show schedule in advance.
- Getting There: the nearest airports are Innsbruck and Salzburg, both with train or transfer connections into the Zillertal valley and on to Mayrhofen.
- What to Wear: full ski gear is needed for daytime slopes, plus warm layers for the evening mountain and outdoor parties.
- Accommodation: Mayrhofen’s rooms sell out well ahead of festival week, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore Mayrhofen: the Zillertal valley offers glacier skiing and hiking well beyond festival week — browse top Mayrhofen tours and activities here.
