Pernik which is located in North West Bulgaria holds every year the Surva Carnival. This is a two days festive carnival dedicated to masks and disguises.The event is known as one of the greatest carnivals of the Balkan. The main idea of the carnival, which started on 1966, is reviving and renewal of ancient culture traditions with emphasis on traditional Bulgarian dress.
Thousands of people, local and tourists pour into town and the demand for accommodation is higher than usual, therefore it is advisable to check hotel prices and make reservations ahead of time.
The carnival reaches its climax in a giant disguise/ mask parade with the participation of representatives from Bulgarian villages and lot of groups from out of the country.
