Sydney Design the International Design Festival

Presented by the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Design Week has grown into Australia’s longest-running design festival, celebrating architecture, interiors, fashion, furniture and digital design through the eyes of local and international creatives.

Held annually each September, the festival transforms the Powerhouse Museum and dozens of venues across Sydney — including galleries, studios and community spaces — into a city-wide celebration of design thinking and creativity.

Design Highlights:

  • World-Class Speakers: Internationally acclaimed architects and designers join leading Australian voices for keynote talks and public conversations on the future of design.
  • City-Wide Program: Beyond the Powerhouse Museum, events are staged at galleries, studios and community spaces throughout Sydney, including a strong focus on Western Sydney venues.
  • Talks, Tours & Workshops: The program mixes panel discussions, guided tours, hands-on workshops and film screenings spanning architecture, furniture, fashion and digital media.
  • Community & Culture Focus: Recent editions have spotlighted community-led design, showing how public spaces, cultural centres and grassroots projects shape everyday city life.

Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:

  • Tickets: Many talks and panels are ticketed and can sell out, while a number of exhibitions and public programs are free to attend — check the official program ahead of time to plan your day.
  • Hub Venue: The Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo acts as the festival’s main hub, with satellite events spread across the city, so plan your route around a mix of locations.
  • Getting There: The Powerhouse Museum is a short walk from Central Station and well served by light rail and buses, making public transport the easiest way to reach festival venues around the city.
  • What to Wear: Comfortable walking shoes are a good idea, since exploring exhibitions and moving between venues across Sydney involves plenty of time on your feet.
  • Accommodation: Sydney’s CBD and inner-city hotels fill up quickly during major event periods, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
  • Explore Sydney: Round out your trip with the city’s harbour, beaches and iconic landmarks — browse top Sydney tours and activities here.
