Tamar Valley Folk Festival
Tamar Valley Folk Festival grew out of a single trial concert held by the local George Town folk club in 1991, which proved popular enough that a small volunteer committee launched the first full festival the following year. More than three decades on, it’s still entirely community-run and volunteer-powered, and has earned a firm place on Australia’s national folk festival calendar.
Held annually each January, the festival takes over the small riverside town of George Town at the mouth of the Tamar River in northern Tasmania for a long weekend. Its intimate, boutique scale is part of the drawcard — with venues clustered in and around the town centre, it has a reputation as a genuinely friendly, easy-to-navigate festival rather than a sprawling one.
