First celebrated in 1972, the Tarra Festival has grown from a small local celebration into Gippsland’s biggest and most popular community event, drawing visitors from across regional Victoria to the small town of Yarram.

Held annually over the Easter long weekend, the festival is coordinated entirely by local volunteers, service clubs, schools and community organisations, who stage a packed program of events across Yarram’s streets, halls and parklands over four days.

Festival Highlights:

• The Tarra Festival Street Parade: The festival’s centrepiece, filling the main street with colourful community floats, marching groups and live entertainment.
• Farm Machinery Parade: An evening procession celebrating the district’s agricultural heritage, marking the festival’s official opening.
• Markets & Stalls: Street stalls, craft markets and a Lions Club market run throughout the weekend, showcasing local produce and community groups.
• Family Fun Day: A weekend full of family-friendly favourites including the Easter Bonnet Competition, the Bunny Run fun run, pancakes in the park, and an evening lantern festival at nearby Port Albert.

• Free Entry: The great majority of the festival’s street events, parades and markets are free to attend, with only a handful of ticketed workshops, dinners and shows.
• Parade Viewing: Arrive early on parade day to claim a good spot along the main street — it’s the festival’s busiest morning and footpaths fill up fast.
• Getting There: Yarram sits in South Gippsland, reached by car via the South Gippsland Highway, with the nearest V/Line rail connections at Traralgon or Sale followed by a local road transfer.
• What to Wear: Comfortable walking shoes and light layers suit the mild autumn weather, with a jacket handy for cooler evening events.
