Ten Days on the Island
Established in 2001 by the Tasmanian Government, Ten Days on the Island is Australia’s only statewide arts festival, built around an exchange of island cultures — bringing artists from island nations around the world to perform alongside Tasmanian artists across the state.
Held biennially each March, the festival spreads its program across dozens of venues and towns throughout Tasmania, with Hobart serving as a hub alongside events in regional centres and smaller communities across the island.
Festival Highlights:
- Statewide Program: Performances, exhibitions, and events take place in over fifty locations across Tasmania, from Hobart to remote regional towns.
- Island Cultures Exchange: Artists from island nations and regions around the world — spanning music, theatre, storytelling, and dance — share the program alongside Tasmanian performers.
- Multidisciplinary Arts: The festival spans music, theatre, opera, storytelling, dance, film, and visual arts, with both ticketed and free events on offer.
- Statewide Arts Legacy: As Australia’s only statewide arts festival, it doubles as a showcase of Tasmania’s own arts and cultural scene alongside its international guests.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Tickets: Ticketed events are sold through the official website, with some program items offered free — check individual event listings ahead of time.
- Plan Your Route: Because the festival is spread across the whole state, decide in advance which region(s) to focus on rather than trying to cover all of Tasmania in ten days.
- Getting There: Hobart is the main gateway by air, with regional events best reached by car — a hire car is worth arranging in advance if you plan to travel beyond Hobart.
- What to Wear: Tasmanian March weather can shift quickly between mild days and cool evenings, so layers and a light rain jacket are a safe bet wherever the program takes you.
- Accommodation: Rooms in Hobart and smaller regional towns can book out fast during the festival, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore Tasmania: With events scattered across the island, it’s worth building extra time into the trip to explore beyond the festival venues — browse tours and activities across Tasmania here.
