Medellín, the second largest city in Colombia, celebrates The Flower Festival (in Spanish: Feria de las Flores) every year in late July / early August (various dates).

The festival is considered to be the city’s most important traditional cultural event, with colorful peasant parades, various flower competitions, festive folklore shows, flower exhibitions, horse fair, classic car parade, live music shows and more.

The highlight of the festival is the traditional Silleteros Parade, when the peasants carry, heavy-weight wooden carriers decorated with hundreds of colorful flowers. The parade marks the historical slavery period when the peasants were required to serve, among other things, “as a means of transportation” for the nobles who were carried to their district up and down the steep paths in the surrounding hills, sitting on the farmer’s carrier.

The festival offers more than 150 various events of concerts and other activities. Thousands of people, local and tourists pour into town and the demand for accommodation is higher than usual, therefore it is advisable to check hotel prices and make reservations ahead of time.

Visiting Medellin during the events’ days promise the visitors a memorable cultural experience.

The festival’s program, venue, schedule of events, etc. is present in the Alcaldía de Medellín link website. See details below, under “Event Related Information” section.

Colombia background and overview
Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others are Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year conflict between government forces and anti-government insurgent groups and illegal paramilitary groups - both heavily funded by the drug trade - escalated during the 1990s. The insurgents lack the military or popular support necessary to overthrow the government and violence has been decreasing since about 2002, but insurgents continue attacks against civilians and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence. Paramilitary groups challenge the insurgents for control of territory and the drug trade. Most paramilitary members have demobilized since 2002 in an ongoing peace process, although their commitment to ceasing illicit activity is unclear. The Colombian Government has stepped up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, and now has a presence in every one of its municipalities. However, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.
