The Grand Sumo Tournament ( Basho)

The Grand Sumo Tournament (Bash) is held, yearly, in Tokyo. Sumo’s wrestling is known in Japan as an ancient sport which, now days, is part of the totality traditional and nationality Japanese uniqueness. The wrestlings which take place in May are the greatest in the world.

In the annual wrestling, six tournaments take place where in each of it, every wrestler competes in fifteen competitions. Due to the numerous visitors during the tournaments days and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms & tickets well in advance.

The competitor who achieves most of the points is the one who win the competition. The competition’s judgment is based on rules and laws on the way the wrestling should be carried on. The wrestling is between two big body wrestlers. The Sumo wrestlers build their bodies with a special diet.

The wrestlers wear special traditional belt name Mawashi on their waist line. The fights takes place in a round ring made of sand and clay. Its diameter is 14.93 feet (4.55 m). The margins’ ring are delimit by a rope made of rice fibers. Inside the ring, two white lines are painted, which the wrestlers are not allowed to cross, to mark the start position of the competitors.

According to tradition, salt is being spread on the ring as a good luck and success sign. Every wrestler has to push the other one out of the ring where the brushed sand that was spread around makes it easy for the judge to determine whether a wrestler has touched his foot, or another part of his body, outside the ring. The spectator is guaranteed a unique sportive experience that hardly can be found outside Japan.
