Woodford Folk Festival
Woodford Folk Festival began life as the Maleny Folk Festival in 1987, before outgrowing its original showground and relocating to a purpose-built 500-acre property, Woodfordia, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland in 1994. What started as a small folk gathering has grown into one of Australia’s largest cultural events, drawing around 125,000 patrons for a program of roughly 2,000 performers across more than 25 venues.
Held annually over the turn of the year, spanning the final days of December into the first day of January, the festival transforms Woodfordia into a temporary town, with tree-lined avenues of restaurants, cafes, market stalls, bars and street theatre linking its many stages. Most festival-goers camp on site for the full week, making it as much a communal village as a concert program.
Festival Highlights:
- World Music & Dance: An eclectic program spans folk, roots, world, jazz, blues and contemporary music from local, national and international artists, alongside dance performances drawing on traditions from across the globe.
- Circus, Cabaret & Comedy: Big-top style circus acts, cabaret shows, stand-up comedy and street theatre run throughout the site, spilling out from the formal venues into the avenues between them.
- New Year’s Fire Event: The festival’s signature closing ceremony sees tens of thousands gather to watch a spectacular fire performance and the ceremonial burning of a large structure, preceded by a candlelit Three Minutes’ Silence and followed by a Sunrise Ceremony featuring Tibetan chants.
- Children’s Program: A dedicated kids’ precinct runs its own full schedule of workshops, performances and activities, making the festival a genuinely family-friendly week away.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Tickets: Entry is ticketed, with single-day and full multi-day passes available; multi-day passes sell out well ahead of time, so early booking through the official festival site is recommended.
- Venue Layout: The site is spread across dozens of themed venues and open-air stages linked by walking avenues, so comfortable footwear and a festival map (available on arrival) make it much easier to plan a day around overlapping sessions.
- Getting There: Woodford sits north of Brisbane in the Sunshine Coast hinterland; shuttle buses run from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast during the festival, and a large on-site car park is also available for those driving in.
- What to Wear: Queensland’s subtropical summer brings heat, strong sun and the chance of sudden storms, so sun protection, a hat, light clothing and a rain jacket are all worth packing, along with warmer layers for cool evenings.
- Accommodation: On-site camping is the traditional way to experience the full week, while those wanting a bed nearby should look at Woodford, Caboolture and the wider Sunshine Coast, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore the Sunshine Coast: Extend the trip with the region’s beaches, hinterland villages and rainforest walks before or after the festival — browse top Sunshine Coast tours and activities here.
